UX & UI Design: Advanced Search for We Work Remotely (WWR)
Timeline:
One month (2020)
My role:
UX Designer
Deliverable:
Advanced Search engine (desktop)
Platform:
Figma
Introduction
When I joined We Work Remotely in 2019, I was surprised that the job board was only equipped with a basic keyword search.
At that time, I was also managing the customer support inbox. I saw so many questions and comments that requested specific filters and ways of finding jobs. User feedback told us that this was one of the most important features to lean into, but the implementation was dependent on the right timing as I was joining a team of three.
For the next year, I advocated hard for this feature despite sounding like a broken record. And in 2020, we finally made it happen!
Problem
Job hunting is a painful process. Candidates need additional search criteria to help find results quickly and easily.
The Mission
Build a new search page for job seekers to filter their results.
Market & User Research
The job seekers in the WWR Community had already sent us a ton of feedback requesting specific search criteria.
The ability to include the location was by far the top request. For the first iteration, we prioritized the basic filters:
Keywords, Category, Location, Company and Job Type.
Prototyping
Fighting time constraints and knowing that we werenโt going to be updating any UI components, I skipped the wireframing and went straight into prototyping, adding the UI components and UX flows at the same time.

Impact
๐ In all of our customer touchpoints (social media, customer support inbox, Slack community), candidates displayed excitement and gratitude.
๐ We saw a decline in emails about finding jobs on WWR.
๐ We saw increased engagement with our platform โ candidates provided further feedback for future iterations and let us know what they liked.
